The art of embossing consists of styling metal sheets, leather or other material to make raised figures appear on one of the faces. For the realization of this art, both mechanized and industrialized methods such as diamond engraving or laser engraving might be used, the latter being much more modern and used for the engraving of glass mainly, as handmade methods, such as the mill engraving or hand engraving with the use of gravers.
The handling of the graver can be done by pushing it with one hand or also by using an engraving hammer. The first technique requires a greater skill on the part of the craftsman since it has to control the force that exerts on the piece and the inclination that gives the tool to eliminate the precise amount of material, a slipping will cause damage to the piece and leave it unusable. In the second technique the artisan engraver holds the graver with one hand while with the other he gives small strokes with the engraving hammer to eliminate material and thus make the needed relief. Although the first technique is the most complicated and the one that takes the most learning time, nevertheless is the one most used by the artisan jewelers and craftsmen.
There is a wide range of gravers on the market, designed for jewelers as well as for all types of artisans, made in different types of steel. This is a very important detail when it comes to choosing the tool to be used, not only for its price but also for its quality. At Diloy Tools we have opted for high speed steel gravers, better known as HSS. We already discussed the characteristics and advantages of this type of steel in the drill section which you can check to learn more about its properties. Why to choose this type of graver is an easy question. These jewellery tools suffer continuous wear due to their use, they undergo ups and downs of temperature due the friction to which they are submitted to. For these reasons the quality of the steel plays a fundamental role in getting the graver to stay sharp as long as possible, this way the craftsman can get a more refined work and will not waste so much time sharpening the tools.
In our catalog you will find various profiles of gravers that will fit, without a doubt, to all your needs. Onglette, knife, half round and flat, all of them in a wide range of measures with which you can perform any type of engraving work on any material.
