Files and needle files

Jewellery tools, crimpers, goldsmiths, model makers and craftsmen in general.

To file, to crimp or to smooth a metal with the file. It is the process of metal grinding. The process of filing is the step in which the design is refined and the imperfections produced, for example, in the welding process are corrected. It is a delicate process because it must be taken into account that with each step of the file there is a reduction of the material, a reduction that will vary, among other things, the chopping of the file used and also it might leave marks that will need to be corrected or removed in a subsequent polishing process. For this reason, the thicker teeth files are used in a first process and then files with smaller teeth will be used one after the other in order to leave the piece free of scratches.

The files are characterized by their shape, their length and the cuts per cm.

In terms of length it has to be taken into account that in some cases it will correspond to the entire tool, including the handle area, and in other cases will be limited to the teeth face area.

The cut number indicates the number of teeth per centimeter (Z / cm), always measured perpendicular to the teeth. This tells us that a file 10cm in length and a cut 2 will have 20 (Z / cm) teeth per centimeter. In jewelry this cut 2 is one of the most used because of its wide versatility.

In any jewelry work, files of different sections and thicknesses are used. Thicker teeth removes more material and leaves deeper marks, so it will be more difficult to leave a surface with no signs of grinding. The sections of the files are adapted to the work surface. The most used is the half round, since we can use the flat part for straight surfaces and the semicircular part for curved surfaces. Needle files are smaller files found in different cuts and very diverse forms. They serve to rectify the marks of the file and to reach parts that with the normal file would be impossible.

Precision files, as the name implies, are designed to carry out high precision work thanks to the high quality materials with which they are manufactured following European standards and quality controls. The wide variety of profiles we have and their excellent quality make them indispensable tools in any jewelry work.

Needle files or limestones have sharp edges and pointed ends, especially suitable for finishing work on both soft metals and for steel and its alloys. For that work we have a variety of shapes that will adapt to your needs such as the flat needle file, half round needle file, triangular, square, round, knife and cap. As an option for those who are starting and need an assortment of needle files we have the set of 6 pieces with the most used forms.
