The most common end is polish, which makes the jewel shine and highlight the brilliance of the metal and gems. Polishing is done with the polisher motor, felt roughing discs, polishing brushes or polishing mops and roughing and shining pastes.
The polishing process has two stages: the first one is roughing, where the felts and brushes are used with the roughing paste to remove the lines caused by the last emery and thus erase all marks that may have remained in the piece during the whole process of elaboration. After grinding and sanding processes, remaining burrs and scratches must be removed before to prepare the surface for polishing and finalization; the second is the polishing, where shine is obtained using the cotton disks with the shining paste. Other techniques for metal, used more in contemporary jewelry, are shading and satin, which are achieved with different materials such as pumice powder, scouring pads, sandblasting, diamond tipped mills and a long etcetera.
In the polishing process, polishing compounds or pastes which vary according to the degree of the abrasive particles contained therein can be used, thus obtaining different results and being used as well for different materials. These polishing pastes are applied to the different discs we will use in the process.
